New York: The State of Qatar has reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to mediation, dialogue, and preventive diplomacy as essential tools for de-escalation and the preservation of international peace and security.
The position was outlined by Sheikha Alya Ahmed bin Saif Al-Thani, Permanent Representative of the State of Qatar to the United Nations, during a United Nations General Assembly meeting on “Strengthening the Role of Mediation in the Peaceful Settlement of Disputes, Conflict Prevention and Resolution” held at UN Headquarters in New York.
Addressing member states, Sheikha Alya emphasized that mediation remains one of the most effective mechanisms for peacefully resolving disputes, preventing conflicts, and building sustainable peace. She noted that mediation serves as a cornerstone of preventive diplomacy and conflict resolution, particularly at a time when global conflicts are becoming increasingly complex due to technological developments and when the world is experiencing the highest number of armed conflicts since the establishment of the United Nations.
She highlighted that preventive diplomacy, mediation, and the peaceful settlement of disputes are fundamental pillars of Qatar’s foreign policy, rooted in the principles of the country’s constitution and aligned with relevant UN resolutions.
The Qatari envoy underscored the country’s active role in international mediation efforts, including joint initiatives with the Egypt, the United States, and Türkiye that led to a ceasefire agreement in the Gaza Strip signed in October last year. She stressed the importance of all parties honoring their commitments, fully implementing the agreement, and ensuring the continuous and unhindered delivery of humanitarian assistance to Gaza.
Sheikha Alya also highlighted Qatar’s ongoing peace efforts in eastern Congo through the Doha Framework for a Comprehensive Peace Agreement, signed on November 15, 2025. In addition, she pointed to Qatar’s mediation role in Afghanistan, which culminated in the signing of the historic peace agreement between the United States and the Taliban in Doha in February 2020.
The ambassador also renewed Qatar’s appreciation for the mediation efforts of Pakistan between the United States and the Iran, reiterating Doha’s full support for initiatives aimed at reducing tensions and strengthening regional security and stability.
Qatar reaffirmed that dialogue and mediation remain indispensable instruments for addressing contemporary conflicts and advancing sustainable peace worldwide.
