Doha: Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, in cooperation with Qatar University, organized a national workshop on coral reef restoration as part of ongoing efforts to safeguard Qatar’s marine ecosystems and preserve biodiversity.

The workshop brought together representatives from government entities, academic institutions and industry sectors to discuss the environmental challenges facing coral reefs and to explore scientific and practical solutions for their protection and recovery.

Assistant Undersecretary for Protection and Natural Reserves at the ministry, Dr Ibrahim Abdul Latif Al Maslamani, said coral reefs are among Qatar’s most vital marine ecosystems due to their role in supporting biodiversity, sustaining fish stocks and protecting coastlines. He stressed that reef restoration is a national environmental priority closely tied to the sustainability of marine resources.

For his part, Dr Mohammed Al Safran, Associate Vice President for Research Centers at Qatar University, said the workshop reflects the university’s commitment to applied environmental research and national collaboration. He noted that protecting coral reefs is a shared responsibility requiring cooperation between academic institutions, government agencies and the private sector.

Director of Wildlife Development at the ministry, Khalid Juma Al Muhannadi, highlighted the importance of coral reefs in scientific research, environmental education and eco-tourism. He added that the ministry is placing special focus on reef restoration initiatives as part of Qatar’s long-term environmental objectives under Qatar National Vision 2030.

Participants emphasized that protecting the marine environment requires stronger partnerships, expanded field studies and sustained investment in scientific research and environmental innovation.
