Mexico City: Mexico’s Ministry of Culture, through the Centro de Cultura Digital (CCD), in partnership with Qatar’s Years of Culture initiative and in collaboration with the 3-2-1 Qatar Olympic and Sports Museum, has unveiled “Journeys to Greatness: Qatar 2022 Legacy,” a major travelling exhibition exploring the enduring impact of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022.

Running from June 18 to August 9, 2026, at Centro de Cultura Digital in Mexico City, the exhibition offers visitors an immersive journey through the story of the first FIFA World Cup held in the Middle East and the Arab world, highlighting the tournament’s cultural significance and lasting legacy beyond the sporting arena.

President of the 3-2-1 Qatar Olympic and Sports Museum, HE Sheikh Mohammed Al-Thani, said the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 marked a defining moment in Qatar’s emergence as a global hub for cultural and sporting exchange.

“Through this exhibition and our partnership with the Years of Culture initiative, we are honoured to carry that legacy forward and to mark the symbolic passing of the torch to Mexico as it prepares to welcome the world in 2026,” he said.

Director of the 3-2-1 Qatar Olympic and Sports Museum Abdulla Al Mulla emphasized the exhibition’s role in transforming a historic event into an engaging public experience through authentic objects, archives, and immersive storytelling.

“As a museum, our role is to take a moment in history and make it something people can walk through, explore and feel for themselves,” he said, noting that Mexico provides the ideal setting to share Qatar’s World Cup story with football and culture enthusiasts ahead of the next tournament.

Curator Sheikha Najla Al-Thani described the exhibition as a celebration of the people, ideas, and cultural moments that shaped Qatar 2022 and continue to inspire future generations.

She noted that the tournament enabled millions around the world to experience the region through hospitality, culture, and human connection, expressing hope that Mexican audiences would find parallels with their own passion for football, identity, and community.

For her part, Marcela Flores Mendez, Director of Centro de Cultura Digital, said hosting the exhibition in Mexico City comes at a time when discussions surrounding identity, technology, culture, and global connectivity are increasingly significant.

She highlighted the exhibition’s ability to encourage reflection on the human stories, cultural exchanges, and shared experiences that continue to define the legacy of the FIFA World Cup.

The exhibition also reflects the broader achievements of Qatar’s Years of Culture initiative, whose people-to-people exchanges and cultural programmes helped strengthen international understanding and dialogue in the years leading up to the tournament.

Through archival materials, multimedia installations, immersive storytelling, and key artefacts from Qatar 2022, “Journeys to Greatness” explores the World Cup as a transformative moment for Qatar and the wider region. The exhibition traces the country’s journey from winning the hosting bid in 2010 to delivering a global event that reshaped perceptions of the Arab world and reinforced Qatar’s position as a centre for cultural and sporting exchange.

Organised around three thematic sections—Road to 2022, The Tournament, and Legacy—the exhibition presents the World Cup as a shared human experience that fostered dialogue and understanding across cultures and generations.

The Road to 2022 section examines Qatar’s extensive preparations for hosting the tournament, highlighting major infrastructure, transport, and urban development projects that transformed the nation.

The Tournament captures the atmosphere of the competition through memorable matches, fan experiences, and moments of global connection, while showcasing Qatar’s culture and traditions to international audiences.

Meanwhile, Legacy explores the tournament’s long-term impact, including changing perceptions of the Arab world, advancing sustainability initiatives, empowering youth, and promoting cultural exchange.

A comprehensive public programme will accompany the exhibition, featuring guided tours, school visits, educational sessions for adults, interactive workshops, and storytelling events focusing on iconic moments, legendary players, and influential figures connected to the Qatar 2022 experience.

Its presentation in Mexico forms part of a broader cultural programme symbolizing the transition from Qatar 2022 to the 2026 FIFA World Cup, reinforcing how the tournament’s spirit continues through culture, memory, and enduring human connections across borders.
