Doha: The Qatar Media Corporation launched the first edition of the “Media Encyclopedia” during a cultural salon held as part of the Doha International Book Fair, in the presence of media professionals, intellectuals, academics, and visitors.

The initiative seeks to document media concepts, theories, personalities, and institutions within a comprehensive academic framework, while supporting Arabic-language media knowledge and keeping pace with rapid digital transformation. It also aims to enhance critical awareness and elevate media discourse across the Arab world.

The launch was accompanied by a panel discussion featuring Executive Director of the encyclopedia Mohammed bin Sulaan Al Marri and Chairman of the Scientific Committee Dr. Mohammed Al Khatib. The session highlighted the encyclopedia as a pioneering Arab knowledge project designed to reassess widely circulated media terminology, analyze its intellectual and cultural dimensions, and reinforce the role of the Arabic language in modern media discourse.

Speakers stressed the importance of revisiting imported concepts and establishing a unified Arabic reference capable of addressing evolving digital realities and contemporary media challenges.

The encyclopedia was presented as an interactive and continuously evolving project open to review and development, with future plans including research initiatives, academic programs, professional training activities, printed editions, and QR-code-based access systems.

In statements to Qatar News Agency, Al Marri said the project reflects Qatar’s growing position as a regional hub for knowledge and media. He noted that work on the encyclopedia began in November with 100 media terms and has now expanded into its first complete edition.

He explained that the initiative aims to refine media terminology due to its influence on public perception, while strengthening Arabic media identity and improving professional standards across the sector.

Dr. Al Khatib stated that the project initially focused on identifying the most widely used and intellectually complex media terms before studying them within their linguistic and contextual environments. He added that the encyclopedia seeks to deepen public awareness of how media language evolves and shapes collective consciousness.

According to Al Khatib, the first edition contains around 300 terms, with plans to expand the encyclopedia to nearly 1,000 entries over the next two years in order to address emerging developments in digital media and communication.

He emphasized that the encyclopedia goes beyond conventional definitions by critically examining the intellectual and historical roots of concepts, describing its methodology as one based on analytical deconstruction rather than superficial commentary.

Al Khatib further noted that the project treats terminology as integrated conceptual systems rather than isolated vocabulary, aiming to build critical awareness of how media narratives are formed. He also stressed that artificial intelligence should not be viewed solely as a technical tool, but as a linguistic, media, and cultural phenomenon requiring deeper study and analysis.

Meanwhile, Official Spokesperson for the Qatar Media Corporation Ali Issa said the encyclopedia will serve journalists and media professionals by helping them better understand and deconstruct media terminology and its broader implications.

He added that the encyclopedia is expected to become a major reference for media professionals throughout the Arab world, contributing to the advancement of the regional media landscape through future editions and continued knowledge development initiatives.
